Launching A Writer’s Craft, 2nd Edition

Cover of A Writer's Craft, 2nd Ed with blue fountain pen and engraving of a seascape flowing from the nib

As I detailed on my SubStack last week, I’ve spent a good chunk of the summer and fall working on copy edits and three rounds of proofreading for the second edition of A Writer’s Craft. The most recent development was reviewing and commenting on six potential covers, which then got narrowed down to a combination of the top two — really, the design of our favorite with the colors from our second choice. And that led Bloomsbury to post the cover on their web page for the book, which I had already seen was available.

Naturally, I also wanted to post to social media about the cover, and now, that has led me to add a page for the second edition to my site. I will be updating this page as there is news, but it already has the new cover, the list price: $26.95in the US, 17.99 pounds in UK, and 2101 rupee in India, $35.99 in Australia, or $39.55 in Canada, though I didn’t list all the international prices. There will be updated reviews and links as we get closer to the official pub date of April 1, 2027. (No, the irony of that date has not escaped me! But I’ll have fun with that when the time comes.)

For now, you can get the latest information on the book from that page, which links to Bloomsbury where you can preorder and order exam copies for teachers who want to consider it for Summer or Fall 2027 classes.

Everything you loved in the first edition is still there in the second, plus more examples, more notebook exercises, and additional content for every chapter, including sections on AI, screenwriting, forms of poetry, worldbuilding in fiction, and and expanded discussion of the lyric essay.

It has been fabulous to work with the editorial and production teams at Bloomsbury. They have supported me at every step of the way. Many thanks to Lucy Strong and Issy Bowyer who have believed in this project from the outset and worked to shepherd it to this point where it is so close to being a reality. Creating the page on this site to announce it feels like one of the last big steps on that journey.
